BarNET ZERO challenge
Working together to become one of London’s most sustainable boroughs, join us on our journey.
About the challenge
The climate crisis affects everyone, and it will take all of us working together to find solutions. That’s why we teamed up with Middlesex University to launch the BarNET ZERO Challenge, a competition to encourage individuals and communities in Barnet to come forward with fresh, innovative ideas that can help reduce carbon emissions and move us closer to our net zero goals.
Discussions about climate change at the Barnet’s Citizen Assembly, led to 5 themes to help drive Barnet’s transition to a net zero carbon future:
- Waste and Sustainable consumption
- Learning, communication and partnerships
- Nature and Biodiversity
- Travel
- Housing, buildings and renewable energy

The Challenge Process
To help refine the ideas submitted, we hosted a series of workshops with:
- our theme leads
- academics
- community organisations
- our sponsors, NatWest and Microsoft
Guidance was also given to applicants about creating an ‘eco social business model’ and a 90 second video.
The winners
There were over 100 submissions.
Following workshops these were further developed into 22 workable solutions
Judges decided on the top 3 ideas:
- Fiona Quinton - GRUBS – Green Roofs Upon Bus Shelters
- Anna Tobin - Eco Mobility
- Karem Salas - Eco Learn and Play
Lasty the public were asked to vote for the winner at Brent Cross Shopping Centre.
We're pleased to announce the winner was Fiona Quinton and we are working with her now to develop the GRUBS idea.
The BarNET ZERO Challenge is an ongoing effort, and every idea brings us closer to a greener, more sustainable Barnet. Join us, and together we can create a more sustainable future for our borough.
