Climate change scorecard
Working together to become one of London’s most sustainable boroughs, join us on our journey.
We are committed to becoming a net zero council by 2030 and a net zero borough by 2042.
To help us track and improve our progress, we use Climate Emergency UK’s (CE UK) Climate Plan Scorecards. These scorecards assess how councils are tackling climate change and help guide us on our journey towards a sustainable future.
In this section
Council climate action scorecards
The aim of the scorecards is to:
- demonstrate how councils are delivering on climate action in the UK using credible and transparent data
- encourage councils to use their Council Climate Action Scorecard ratings to develop their current Climate Action Plans and implement policies to help them reach net zero
- be used by CE UK, organisations in the sector, and individuals to advocate for policy improvements and further climate action, both locally and nationally
How scoring works
Climate Emergency UK assess council’s climate action plans through 28 questions. Questions relate to topics including:
- transport
- biodiversity
- buildings and heat
- waste reduction and food
CE UK score Councils against these criteria using information they have received.
How we perform in the scorecards ranking
In 2021, Barnet scored 0 across the 9 sections of the Climate Emergency UK’s Scorecard ratings. Since then, we have made significant progress on our journey to net zero.
In 2022 we ranked in the top 18 percent of councils in the Climate Emergency UK scorecards.
2023 saw us scoring 46 percent, ahead of 114 other UK councils.
Areas we performed best in were:
- Planning and Land Use, with a score of 78 percent
- Collaboration and Engagement, with a score of 69 percent
While our 2023 score of 46 percent is a great achievement, we'll build on this success in future to reach even higher scores. It serves as a reminder that the path to net zero is an ongoing endeavour and there is a lot more to do.
