Trish's story

A place to belong: Trish’s journey with Shared Lives

Trish always enjoyed being around family and friends, and more importantly being a part of the community. Trish has additional support needs and when her parents sadly passed away, she was offered a few options for residential support, which did not seem to work for her. She found it difficult to settle into her new environment, and felt that she wanted something more than just a carer to support her.

Seven years ago, Trish was introduced to her current Shared Lives carers – a husband-and-wife team who opened their doors to Trish and welcomed her into their family. Here, she found a loving space to share, whilst also receiving the care and support she needed to live a fulfilling life. She has a wonderful relationship with her carers and has also formed a special bond with her carer’s sister in Dorset, who is now a part of Trish’s wider support network. Trish visits Dorset a few times a year and spends a lot of time on the beach and with the family dogs.

‘OH I love it! I love going to Dorset because I love the dogs! They are just so gorgeous!’

Trish's Shared Lives carers have also supported her recovery and the maintaining of her independence following a stay in hospital. With the support of her Shared Lives network, Trish is an active member of various community groups and enjoys going to charity shops regularly. At home she enjoys spending time watching her favourite quiz shows on tv and doing arts and craft activities with her Shared Lives carers.

Trish states 'I'm so grateful for everything everyone has done for me. I was feeling so sad and now I am happy again'
