Apply for single person Council Tax discount
If you are the only adult living in the property, you may be eligible for a 25% discount.
Who can apply
You can get 25% off your Council Tax bill if you count as an adult and live:
- on your own
- with other people who do not count as adults for Council Tax.
You're not counted as an adult for Council Tax if you are:
- under 18
- a student in full-time education
- on a specific apprentice scheme
- a student nurse
- under 25 and get funding from the Skills Funding Agency or Young People’s Learning Agency
- a foreign language assistant registered with the British Council
- severely mentally impaired
- a specific type of carer or care worker
- a diplomat
How to apply

- You will need your Council Tax account reference code
- It can take up to 10 days before you receive a response from us
- You will receive a revised Council Tax bill showing the single person discount and revised instalment amounts
If your situation changes
Use the link below if you need to cancel your Council Tax single person discount. A new bill will be sent to you.
To cancel a single person discount you must have:
- a Council Tax account
- your name on the bill, or have permission from someone named on the bill
Cancel a single person discount
It can take up to 10 days before you receive a response from us.
You will receive a revised Council Tax bill without the single person discount.
If someone stays with you for a short period (up to 3 weeks) this will not affect your single person discount. If they stay with you for longer then you must tell us.
