Who can get a single person discount
You can get 25% off your Council Tax bill if you count as an adult and live:
- on your own
- with other people who do not count as adults for Council Tax.
Who does not count as an adult
You are not counted as an adult for Council Tax if you are:
- under 18
- a student in full-time education
- on a specific apprentice scheme
- a student nurse
- under 25 and get funding from the Skills Funding Agency or Young People’s Learning Agency
- a foreign language assistant registered with the British Council
- severely mentally impaired
- a specific type of carer or care worker
- a Diplomat.
Application for a single person discount
You can also use this form to apply for or cancel an existing single person discount.
It will take about 5 minutes to complete.
You will need your council tax account reference code.

It can take up to 7 days before you receive a response from us.
Cancel a single person discount
If someone stays with you for a short period (a few weeks) this will not affect your single person discount, but if they stay with you for longer then you must let us know as soon as possible so that we can remove the single person discount.
You must be the person liable for paying Council Tax in order to cancel a single person discount.
