Food Hygiene Rating Scheme

Check that a restaurant, takeaway or food shop has good levels of food safety by viewing food hygiene ratings
What is the Food Hygiene Ratings Scheme?
The scheme is operated by the Food Standards Agency and delivered by councils. It gives you information about hygiene standards in:
- restaurants
- pubs
- cafés
- takeaways
- hotels
- supermarkets
- other places you are served with food to eat
Our team carry out inspections of food businesses in Barnet to check levels of safety and hygiene.
After an inspection, food businesses are given a food hygiene rating between 0 and 5. Most food businesses are part of this scheme.
Some businesses may be exempt from the scheme, for example a newsagent selling only wrapped sweets. These businesses may still be listed but will show as exempt from the scheme.

Request a re-visit
You can request a re-visit where your business will be assessed for a new rating at any time after your inspection.
Before you request a re-visit, you should take action to rectify any non-compliance identified at the time of inspection.
The current charge for a re-visit is £298.59 (VAT not applicable). Your re-visit will not take place until you have paid the charge. If you wish to pay by credit or with a debit card, please call 020 8359 7995.
You should be aware that your rating can go down, go up or remain the same following a re-visit.
If you would like to request a re-visit, please download and return the completed form to foodsafety@barnet.gov.uk.
You should attach or include evidence of works carried out such as receipts and photographs. If you require further information, you should contact the inspecting officer using the telephone number on your inspection report.
Appeal a rating
You can appeal a rating (ODT 54 KB) if you do not agree that the rating reflects the standards at the time of the inspection.
Right to reply
You have a right to reply in respect of the food hygiene rating given. You can explain any mitigating circumstances or highlight improvements that you have made since the inspection.
