SUGAR SMART Barnet
Skip to:
In the UK and worldwide, many people are consuming too much sugar. Excessive sugar consumption is linked to weight gain, tooth decay and can also increase the risk of developing lifestyle-related diseases such as cardiovascular disease and Type 2 Diabetes.
SUGAR SMART Barnet is a local campaign about supporting workplaces, businesses, and organisations such as early-year settings, schools, or charities to reduce sugar consumption. This is aligned with our Local Government Declaration on Healthier Food and Sugar Reduction.
Supporting the campaign’s aim to reduce consumption involves the completion of Sugar Smart actions. These are activities that improve health education about sugar and empower healthy dietary habits. For example, an organisation could decide to:
- Conduct a Sugar Smart Quiz
- Run promotions on healthier food and drink
- Actively promote free drinking water
Early Year Settings and Schools
If you are an early-year’s setting or school that has already signed up to Sugar Smart Barnet, thank you for pledging to become a Sugar Smart setting. If not, sign up now for the campaign!
Select your chosen Sugar Smart actions by completing Section 2 of the Sugar Smart Barnet form. A Sugar Smart actions planning template document has been created, which lists actions and includes resources and local support available to help complete those actions. Being a Sugar Smart setting also requires you to report on Sugar Smart actions you have chosen to complete. This can be done by completing Section 3 of the Sugar Smart Barnet form.
The Start & Grow Well Public Health Team are available to provide campaign information, and tailored advice and signpost your setting to support as required e.g. local agencies who can assist with and deliver health-promoting activities. If you have any questions or queries, please get in touch.
