Risk assessments
All employers are required to carry out a COVID-19 risk assessment. As an employer, you also have a legal responsibility to protect workers and others from risk to their health and safety.
This means you need to think about the risks they face and do everything reasonably practicable to minimise them, recognising you cannot completely eliminate the risk of COVID-19.

Reopening your water systems
If your premises has been closed during the Coronavirus pandemic, water system stagnation and Legionella bacterial growth is a potential hazard that you must consider. You need to ensure you take reasonably practicable steps to control risk from Legionella.
Legionnaires’ Disease is a type of pneumonia which can cause serious illness in persons who are susceptible, such as those over 50 years of age, smokers and those with underlying health conditions. The disease is caused by Legionella bacteria in the water supply being breathed into the lungs.
We urge businesses to carry out safety processes to their water systems as they reopen following COVID-19 lockdown to avoid increasing risk of Legionnaires’ disease.
