Barnet's charter for a safer borough
Skip to:
In Barnet, over 250 residents came together to shape this charter as an open commitment to foster respect and safety in our borough. Whether you're an individual, a business, a school, or a community group, signing the charter means standing up for a culture where everyone feels safe.
We're also offering free bystander intervention training to everyone who signs our charter, to help you learn how to defuse situations, support victims, and safely challenge harmful behaviour when you see it.
Our charter principles
- Awareness - Commitment to learning about the impact of VAWG and sharing that knowledge with others. This includes understanding how everyday behaviours, language, and attitudes can contribute to harm and how we can change that.
- Accountability - Responsibility for our own actions and challenge harmful behaviours when we see them. This means reflecting on our words, choices, and the environments we help shape.
- Challenge - Speak out against sexism, harassment, and harmful stereotypes. By challenging inappropriate behaviour, we help create safer spaces for everyone.
- Advocacy - We encourage others to join us. Change is collective. By promoting the charter and its values, we build a movement in Barnet.
Anti-harassment and bystander intervention training
In partnership with the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, we’re delivering the internationally recognised “Stand Up Against Street Harassment” programme in Barnet. This 30-minute online course gives you the tools and confidence to step in and learn how to defuse situations, support victims, and safely challenge harmful behaviour when you see it.
The training is free and part of a global initiative that has reached over 3.8 million people across 40 countries.
