How school waiting lists work
You will be added to school waiting lists if you:
- don’t get a place at any of the schools you applied for
- have been offered a place at a lower preference school listed on your application and still want a place at a higher preference school
You can ask to have your child’s name added to school waiting lists if you:
- still want a place at a lower ranked school on your application
- add your child’s name to a school you didn’t list on your application

Secondary transfer, infant to junior transfer and starting Reception waiting lists
Waiting lists must be held until 31 December. Most Barnet schools will keep waiting lists open until the end of the school year. This does not apply to Year Seven waiting lists for Queen Elizabeth (Boys) School, The Henrietta Barnett School and St Michael's Catholic Grammar School; these schools only hold waiting lists for the first term in the academic year.
In-year waiting lists
In-year waiting list names are normally held until the end of July each school year . If you have continued interest and you want your child to join the waiting list for the following year, you will need to make an in-year admission application in August.
Your child’s position on the list can go down as well as up; time spent on a waiting list isn’t taken into account.
