Apply for an in-year school place
School applications made during the school year are called in-year applications. Barnet Council coordinates in-year admissions for all Barnet primary schools, except Menorah Primary School for Girls and Menorah Primary School for Boys.
If you wish to apply to a school outside the borough of Barnet, you will need to contact the local authority responsible for the borough where the school is located for information about the application process.
You should apply for an in-year Barnet school place if your child:
- lives in Barnet and does not currently have a school place
- has recently moved or is in the process of moving from abroad or elsewhere and needs a school place
- already has a school place but you want to transfer them to a school in Barnet.
You will need an email address to make your application.

Evidence to support your application
As part of your in-year application you will need to provide specific information.
Your address
You must use your child's permanent address.
Don't use the address of a relative or someone who provides temporary care for your child, a business address or a childminder's address.
A temporary address will not be accepted if you still own a property that was previously used as a home address.
Providing false information to secure a school place is a criminal offence.
Evidence showing proof of address we will accept:
- Council Tax number (put your Council Tax number on the application form)
- provide 1 copy of either your:
- tax credit documentation
- a recent bank statement showing Child Benefit payments
- utility bill dated within the last 3 months
- your most recent rent, mortgage statement or tenancy agreement.
If you don’t have a Council Tax number you must provide 2 documents from the proof of address list.
Child's date of birth
You will need to provide a copy of your child's short birth certificate or a copy of their passport photo page.
Faith schools, foundation schools and academies
Faith schools, some foundation schools and academies will ask you to complete a supplementary information form (SIF) or Certificate of Religious Practice (CRP).
These can be downloaded from school websites and should be returned to the school you are applying to.
Evidence needed for exceptional medical or social needs
Some schools give priority to children with exceptional social or medical needs. You will need to provide written evidence to support your application.
This will normally be a letter from a doctor, social worker or other appropriate professional.
The letter must set out the reasons why that particular school is most suitable and the difficulties that would be faced if the child attends another school.
If you are applying for a place at a Barnet community primary school you must also complete the Exceptional Medical-Social Circumstances form (PDF)

School place offers
We will write to you with the outcome of your application and let you know if we can offer a place at one of your preferred schools.
You must accept or decline this offer.
If none of the schools you have listed are able to offer a place and your child is out of school, we will allocate a place at the nearest school with a vacancy.

Waiting lists
In-year waiting list names are normally held until the end of July each year and you have to submit a new in-year application for the following academic year starting in September.
Your child's name will be kept on the waiting lists for the schools you ranked as a higher preference than the school you have been offered.
Your child’s position on the list can go down as well as up; time spent on a waiting list isn’t taken into account.

Changing your child’s school
Changing schools is not usually in a child’s best interests and a decision to do so should not be taken without careful consideration.
We recommend that you discuss your reasons with the head teacher at the current school before requesting a transfer. If there are things you are not happy with, you may be able to resolve your concerns without changing school.
If your child tells you that they are being bullied or not getting on with other pupils, you should speak to your child’s Form Tutor or Headteacher first, to try to resolve any problems your child may be having.
You also need to bear in mind that most schools in Barnet are full and we may not be able to offer you the school you want.
