Beat the January blues with Barnet Council

Last updated:

This Blue Monday, (17 January 2022), Barnet Council is highlighting ways to help us all keep fit and beat the January Blues.

The #KeepTheVirusOut campaign urges everyone to get the COVID-19 vaccines and booster, wear a face covering in public places, let fresh air in, meet outdoors, rapid test and PCR test and isolate if feeling unwell. The campaign comes as rates of COVID-19 in Barnet are at the highest they have been since the pandemic began with over a quarter of residents yet to get their first vaccine. Barnet Council is working with local community groups and businesses to encourage uptake of the vaccine as well as following COVID-19 safety advice.

Barnet Council held a Holocaust Memorial Commemoration on Sunday 23 January with a service at Middlesex University. The event was cancelled in 2021 due to COVID-19, although an online Service was held instead. The event brought together members of the borough’s Jewish community, as well as members of Barnet’s other numerous communities.

Barnet Council and the Environment Agency have crushed a Ford Transit tipper truck that was used by flytippers to dump huge amounts of rubbish in the otherwise idyllic suburban village of Totteridge. The mountain of trash was discovered on private land. The vehicle used in the flytipping was seized by the Environment Agency on Thursday 8 August after a multi-agency operation that included the Met Police and Barnet Council. The land-owner was left to foot the bill to clear the rubbish that the flytippers had left behind.

This represents a considerable challenge in Barnet, a borough with over 30,000 street trees. The annual leaf fall from these trees is largely weather dependant and therefore unpredictable. As such a sustained effort is needed across many weeks to clear leaves from footways and highways during Autumn and Winter.

Together, we are Barnet will highlight some of our many groups and local projects, as well as individuals, who contribute so much to our community. This week we're focusing on Hadassa Kessler, director of operations and development for Kisharon, which supports people with learning difficulties to become valued members of the community.

The council will be joining thousands of national and local organisations taking part in Giving Tuesday, which happens each year, just after the popular shopping days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
