A group of young creatives from Barnet were awarded ’Best Group of the Year’ for their short film Generation Verified, at a virtual awards ceremony on Friday 22 July. The film, coproduced with Youth Realties and commissioned by Barnet Public Health’s Resilient Schools Programme, was an opportunity for the students to experience all aspects of scriptwriting, acting, film making and directing.

Barnet Council has urged the Government to deliver on promises of supplementary funding to help support the maintained nurseries in the borough. Maintained nursery schools look after a wide range of children and in Barnet are the Moss Hall Nursery School and the Barnet Early Years Alliance Nursery schools, Brookhill, Hampden Way and St Margaret's in New Barnet.

Opened last week the new facilities are part of a multi-million-pound investment in the borough’s parks to help residents get out into the open air, enjoy the green spaces and keep themselves fit. The new playpark includes a mini castle, swings, slides, a seesaw, climbing frame and even an alligator to be traversed, while the gym includes apparatus such as a cross-trainer, weights equipment, kettle bells and bars for triceps dips and chin-ups.

Barnet students celebrated their A-Level results today (18 August), with many schools across the borough having reported achieving their best ever results, despite all the challenges of the last two years. Most exams and assessments did not take place in 2019/20, or 2020/21 academic years, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so this cohort of students experienced public exams for the first time ever.

Barnet pupils are celebrating GCSE results today (25 August), with this year marking the first time since before the pandemic that grades are being assigned based on end-of-year exams, rather than teacher assessments. Most exams and assessments did not take place in the 2019/20 and 2020/21 academic years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so this cohort of students experienced public exams for the first time ever.

“Today is the 75th anniversary of the HMT Empire Windrush docking at the Port of Tilbury at the invitation of the British government. The ship brought 492 passengers to the UK from a number of Caribbean islands including Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. They were invited because we needed people to help us get back onto our feet after the Second World War.

The event was attended by The Worshipful Mayor of Barnet, Cllr Nagus Narenthira, the Representative Deputy Lieutenant, Martin Russell, and other dignitaries and civic guests. The annual ceremony was one of many taking place across the country to recognise those currently serving and those who have served.

Barnet Council’s Cabinet Members have voted unanimously to acquire 249 new build homes from developer Redrow to be made available for affordable rent to the borough’s residents.

The event in partnership with Persian Advice Bureau and New Citizens Gateway, was part of the council’s commitment to make Barnet a borough of sanctuary, and an opportunity to celebrate the contribution of refugees in Barnet. The day included live performances, networking, physical activity, guest speakers and information stalls run by the NHS and the police.
