Barnet Council and the North Central London Clinical Commissioning Group invite everyone aged 18 and over to get their COVID-19 vaccine on a special vaccination bus parked next to Brent Cross Shopping Centre. The bus will stop in the Layfield car park, next to the John Lewis car park, on 12, 14, and 16t July, between 12pm and 7pm.

Go wild with the Summer Reading Challenge

The free annual challenge calls on children aged 4 to 12 to sign up and read six books this summer. This year’s challenge takes children on a trip to Wilderville, with help from the WWF, for a special nature-themed challenge that will inspire them to stand up for the planet. With amazing books, amazing rewards and lots of ideas for taking care of the environment.

New Pavilion Study Centre takes shape

The school’s Executive Head Teacher Joanne Kelly was joined by Councillor David Longstaff, Barnet Council’s Deputy Leader and lead member for education, Chipping Barnet MP Theresa Villiers, and students, on a tour of the building in Whetstone which is due for completion in the summer of 2022.

Hendon Hub proposals take step forward

At a meeting of full Council on 27 July, councillors voted to approve the business case for the Hendon Hub, paving the way for the development proposals to progress. The decision means that planning applications for the scheme, which have been developed in partnership with Middlesex University, can be submitted over the coming weeks. Residents will then have a further opportunity to provide their feedback as part of the statutory planning consultation process.

The hub manages a network of local support, coordinating Barnet Together’s established community groups and volunteers, as well as providing a non-medical urgent care helpline.

Consultation is underway to help develop the document which will play a key role in helping to manage growth and change in Barnet between 2021 and 2036. The consultation will run until 9 August. Between now and 2036 the aim is for more than 36,000 new homes across the borough, new office space, a new park town at Brent Cross and a range of leisure and sports facilities.

Dementia Action Week (17-23 May)

Barnet residents can sign up this month for a week of free online activities, including cookery, painting and singing.  The classes are being offered as part of Dementia Action Week, a national event that aims to improve the lives of people living with dementia. This year, Barnet Council’s Public Health team has joined forces with Age UK Barnet and other partners to focus on reducing risk to dementia.

VE Day 75 at home

While many physical VE Day celebrations are cancelled or postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, there will still be lots of opportunities to get involved safely - from holding a tea party at home, to decorating your home with bunting, sharing your experiences via the council’s social media pages with the hashtag #VEDay75Barnet, or tuning in to a number of special television and radio programmes highlighting this important date.

Feedback invited on Hendon Hub proposals

Working in partnership with Middlesex University and the Barnet Library Service, the proposals will provide new mixed-use accommodation and community facilities to Hendon, as well as a more welcoming and greener public realm designed with local people in mind. The proposals for Hendon will include creating a more pleasant environment in and around The Burroughs, making the area more accessible and inviting for everyone.
