Barnet was due to mark the occasion with a ceremony held at the RAF Museum, Hendon, but the current situation has led to the event being cancelled.  It was to have been attended by the Worshipful the Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Caroline Stock, as well as army reservists, cadets, ex-servicemen and women, and was to have concluded with a fly-past by a Lancaster bomber from the RAF’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

All our schools have shown tremendous dedication and commitment during the COVID-19 pandemic, and as we reach the end of the summer term I would like to thank them for their hard work.

Camden, Hackney, Barnet and Newham Councils have been named as part of a group of councils who will share best practice with others. The aim of their work is to help identify future coronavirus outbreaks and take action to stop the disease spreading in order to get the infection under control and save lives.

"These events have also led me to reflect on racism at home, as well as abroad, and how proud I am to represent Barnet – a borough made so much better and more interesting thanks to its rich diversity. All citizens should be treated equally and fairly, no matter their background, belief or orientation – there is no place for racism or hatred in any society.

The council is contributing £50,000 into the Barnet Community Response Fund and is also committing up to £25,000 to match pound-for-pound public donations. Barnet Community Response Fund has been set up by Barnet Together to help food banks, small charities and local organisations working with communities most at risk and affected by the crisis.

Following a very busy period of religious festivals where families and communities throughout Barnet have sacrificed coming together to observe religious customs and celebrations due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The video provides encouragement and motivation to Barnet’s faith communities, fellow residents and leaders to continue working together to stay safe during this time.

Barnet is one of the first local authorities in the country to use a ‘Completion Notice’ to tackle issues with a structure in Mortimer Close, Childs Hill, which has remained a concrete breeze block shell, with no roof or windows since construction work on the project stalled. Planning officers made repeated efforts to try and ensure the owners improved the appearance of the site and continued with work.

Planning enforcement after pub demolition

The owners of a former pub who demolished the building leaving a boarded-up, vacant site on a busy high street have been told to take action or face having to rebuild the demolished building. The former ‘After Office Hours’ pub, located on the busy High Street in High Barnet, was demolished shortly after receiving planning permission in 2017 to clear the way for a project to replace it with a three-storey building incorporating a bar and homes on the upper floors.

Milegate Limited, and one of its company directors, were fined and ordered to pay costs totalling almost £8,000 at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on 11 February 2020 after ignoring an ‘Untidy Land Notice’ issued by the council’s Planning Enforcement Team requiring that the land behind the former Railway Hotel public house be cleared.
