Mehdi Amrollahi, 58, of Hendon Way, Childs Hill, who is thought to have left the country, was ordered in his absence to pay £223,751.31 under Proceeds of Crime Act legislation after a hearing at Harrow Crown Court. Investigators from the council’s Corporate Anti-Fraud Team (CAFT), working with Planning Enforcement officers, were able to use the Proceeds of Crime Act to bring confiscation proceedings based on the significant income generated from renting out the flats for almost six years, flats which never had the necessary planning permission.

55th Mayor of Barnet sworn into office

During her mayoral year Councillor Stock’s husband, Dr Richard Stock, will be the Mayor’s Consort and Councillor Lachhya Bahadur Gurung will be Deputy Mayor. Councillor Stock takes over the chains of office from the borough’s previous Mayor, Councillor Reuben Thompstone for whom she also served as Deputy Mayor. Born and raised in Barnet, Councillor Stock was first elected to Barnet Council in 2014 as ward member for Totteridge.

The findings come after Ofsted carried out its sixth and final monitoring visit since the council’s Children’s Services were judged to be inadequate in July 2017. During the visit in February, inspectors focused on the quality of practice in the care leaver’s service. They found that the quality of social work practice is improving steadily and that the changes to the service are making a positive difference to the lives of young people, with appropriate support and help offered to care leavers.

Barnet marks Commonwealth Day

This year the event marks the 70th anniversary of the London Declaration, when nations of the Commonwealth agreed to move forward together as free and equal members. The Worshipful Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Reuben Thompstone – who was joined at the Town Hall by Professor Tim Blackman from Middlesex University – read the Queen’s Commonwealth Day message.

The £6.5million facility, which is being built by national charity OnSide Youth Zones, with support from Barnet Council and other funders, will open its doors for the first time on Sunday 23rd June with plans being made for celebrations at the facility, which is located in Montrose Playing Fields. That means there are just 100 days to go and to mark this countdown, the charity has opened its membership, priced at just £5 for per year.

Views sought on young people’s plan

Consultation is currently underway to gather people’s views and opinions on Barnet’s Children and Young People’s Plan (2019-2023). The consultation runs until 7 April. The draft plan has been developed by drawing together input from children and young people, as well as a range of organisations including the police, voluntary sector groups, and education and health services.

Bed-in-shed landlord fined

Barnet Council’s Planning Enforcement team prosecuted S&R Investments, after it ignored repeated warnings not to use the building behind a semi-detached home in Kings Close, Hendon, as a residential dwelling. The company was fined £10,000 and ordered to pay costs of £2,755.60 after being found guilty of failing to comply with a planning enforcement notice at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on 5 March.

Following Barnet Council’s Annual Council meeting last night (20 May), it was confirmed that Cllr Paul Edwards, who will be retiring as a councillor at the next local elections, has made the decision to stand down as Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care this year.

It shows that 34 properties were recovered for those in need during the 2024-2025 financial year after being used illegally.
