Barnet is second friendliest borough in London

Property buyers, Vivo, asked residents to rate their local area based on a number of factors, such as time spent socialising with their neighbours, the availability of community activities and how welcome they felt there. Barnet scored highly in the survey coming 2nd overall based on the categories.  The highest score was for giving back to the community: 90 per cent of people asked said they make an effort to buy locally and support independent businesses.

The Japanese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Taro Aso, attended the celebration event to mark 80 years of partnership between the Japanese Residents Association and Hendon Cemetery as well as the Japanese Ambassador to Britain, Koji Tsuruoka, and the Chairman of the Japanese Association in the UK, Keisako Sanu.

Barnet Council driving towards greener borough

This green initiative, starting in April 2017, will benefit approximately 1,500 current parking permit holders in the borough, who will not need to pay for their parking permits. In January 2015, the council introduced a new emissions based residents’ parking permit scheme, which charges motorists based on the carbon dioxide emissions (gCo2) their cars emit.

Pupils celebrate GCSE exam success

This year sees the introduction of a new nation-wide system for measuring students’ attainment. ‘Attainment 8’ measures the achievement of a pupil across eight qualifications including English and Mathematics. ‘Progress 8’ measures the progress pupils make from the end of primary school to the end of secondary school by comparing their results with the average of other pupils with the same prior attainment. Results so far show the average Attainment 8 score in Barnet is 55 points compared to the national average in 2015 of 48.4 points.

Margarita Sofianova, 55, pleaded guilty to the three offences and was ordered to pay £55,113.09 in fines, costs and victim surcharges. The notices demanded that illegally built single and two-storey extensions to her house be demolished and that the garden be lowered to its previous height to protect trees and the privacy of her neighbours. The extensions were described by a government planning inspector as having a “harmful effect on the character and appearance of the host dwelling, neighbouring properties and the Hampstead Garden Suburb Conservation Area”.

Golders Green Fire

We would like to remind people that the A502 Golders Green Road between the A406 and Highfield Gardens will remain closed until the London Fire Brigade have carried out its investigation. This is likely to start tomorrow.    This is inevitably causing severe traffic congestion in the local area, which will last overnight and into tomorrow morning.    We would advise people to listen to London radio traffic reports for updates on the situation.

The Individual Placement and Support (IPS) programme is funded by Barnet Council and delivered by London charity, Twining Enterprise, in partnership with Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust (BEH) teams.  Barnet IPS joins just one other Centre of Excellence in the capital and 14 in the whole country. The Centre for Excellence status means Barnet partners can share its learning with other areas of England. 

Barnet receives Cleaner Air Borough status

The Cleaner Air Borough accreditation, awarded to boroughs which effectively monitor and reduce air pollution, is part of the Mayor of London’s Local Air Quality Management (LLAQM) framework. Managed by the environmental health team in Re*, the framework is used by local authorities to review and improve air quality within their areas, designed to specifically meet London’s needs. The accreditation relates only to the performance of the borough in terms of working to address local pollution.
