Cllr Barry Rawlings, Leader of Barnet Council, has expressed his sympathy and condolences for Barnet residents affected by the earthquakes that shook Japan on New Year’s Day. Cllr Rawlings said:
A Barnet foster carer who has looked after 19 children over the past 20 years says fostering is one of the best decisions she has ever made. Pam Decaine was one of 13 foster carers to be presented with an award by Barnet Council in recognition of their combined 185 years of service to more than 206 children and young people.
Council celebrates Chanukah with annual menorah lighting

Members of the Jewish faith and other communities came together on Tuesday evening to attend the annual lighting of the menorah outside Hendon Town Hall. The ceremony is a celebration of Chanukah, the eight-day Jewish Festival of Lights. Barnet Council joined in the celebrations, as it does every year, with a 12-ft menorah placed outside the town hall.
A charity that cares for seriously ill children has been awarded £14,000 thanks to an innovative recycling scheme joined by Barnet Council. Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice in High Barnet, which helps children with life-threatening and life-limiting conditions, will benefit from the initiative to recycle scrap metal recovered from Hendon Cemetery and Crematorium.

Barnet Council is to lead on renewable power across the London boroughs, aiming to secure 100% renewable energy for the public sector. The ‘Renewable Power for London’ theme forms part of London Councils’ Climate Programme, established to support collaborative delivery of climate solutions across the capital.

Minister for School Standards, Catherine McKinnell, visited Barnet school to celebrate early language support success

Hasmonean Primary School in Hendon welcomed the Minister for School Standards, Catherine McKinnell, for a special visit to showcase the school’s pioneering work in early years education through the Early Language Support for Every Child (ELSEC) pathfinder programme. The ELSEC initiative, launched as part of a national effort to close the language development gap in early childhood, has seen remarkable success at Hasmonean.
At a ceremony last week, Barnet’s Community Safety leadership team together with Councillor Sara Conway (Cabinet Member for Community Safety) were recognised with a formal Assistant Commissioner’s commendation for their work as part of a police partnership to tackle organised crime and anti-social behaviour on the Grahame Park Estate.
Barnet Council has taken a major step forward in enabling the switch to electric vehicles with the rollout of up to 1,000 new on-street charge points. Installations of the first 500 have begun and will be ready in next three months, the remaining 500 will be installed within three years and will bring the total number of EV charge points in Barnet to 2,500.
