A space for the Mill Hill community to celebrate

The new area, which was used for the Mill Hill Christmas Market and Lights Switch-On in late November, will benefit the entire community as a central meeting place with seating and planting facilities that can be flexibly moved to support market and event days, as well as being available for every day use. Barnet Council, in conjunction with Mill Hill Neighbourhood Forum and Groundwork (delivering work on behalf of TESCO Supermarkets), provided funding to create the space on Brockenhurst Gardens where it meets the Broadway.
Blue badge cheats convicted

Mohammed Mohammed, 20, of Westferry Road, Isle of Dogs, and Berkan Birol, 22, of Commerce Road, Wood Green, were each fined £400, ordered to pay £140 costs and a £40 victim surcharge after pleading guilty at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on 5 July to wrongfully using a disabled persons badge. The court heard that Mohammed was caught by an officer from the council’s Corporate Anti-Fraud Team (CAFT) who was carrying out checks on blue badges being displayed in cars parked in streets in Hendon in December last year.
Resident satisfaction remains high

The survey also shows 70 per cent of people living in the borough remain satisfied with the way the council runs things - maintaining the satisfaction ratings recorded in autumn 2016 and seven per cent higher than the London average. When it comes to the environment, almost three quarters of those surveyed felt the council was doing well in keeping their neighbourhood clean and green, and were positive about the council’s neighbourhood services such as street cleaning, parks and open spaces, street lighting and waste collection services.
Handley Page crash airmen honoured

Pilot Cpt Vernon Earl George Busby, Mr Bertram G. Cooper, Mr R.P. Cooper, Mr W.H. Hathaway, Mr J.W. Windebank all sadly lost their lives when the Handley Page V/1500, B9463, came down shortly after taking off from Cricklewood Aerodrome on 8 June 1918. It was the aircraft’s 13th flight. It crashed in front of 21 Garrick Avenue, leaving only one survivor – Colonel Ogilvie, a passenger in the tail gunner position.
Brent Cross Thameslink development moves ahead

This enables Barnet Council to move the £250m programme to the next stage of the development process, which will deliver an additional new station to support the development of 7,500 new homes, offices and an expanded shopping centre at Brent Cross, along with replacement freight and waste facilities. The new station will open in 2022.
Council launches new electric car scheme

Barnet Council, working in partnership with Re*, has unveiled a new car sharing scheme that allows residents to hire an electric car by the hour. The two Renault Zoe’s, along with two dedicated charge points, are located at Barnet House in Whetstone and can be used by members of E-Car Club. Joining E-Car costs just £50 for a lifetime membership and anybody over the age of 19 with 12 months of licensed driving experience can join.
Heritage volunteers sought

The project aims to involve volunteers from across the borough in helping to survey the borough and update Barnet’s ‘Local List’. The Local Heritage List identifies buildings and monuments which have a special architectural or historic interest, and contribute to the character of the borough. Barnet’s current Local List has around 1,600 buildings and monuments ranging from private homes, to tube stations, water towers and even drinking fountains and cattle troughs.
Annual Council

The local elections, which were held on 3 May, saw the Conservative Group win the majority of seats. The overall result for Barnet’s 63 seats was that the Conservative Group have 38 seats and the Labour Group 25. At Annual Council on 22 May, Councillor Richard Cornelius was confirmed as Barnet Council’s Leader for the next four years, with Councillor Daniel Thomas as Deputy Leader. Committee members, committee chairmen and committee vice chairmen were also confirmed at the meeting.
BEETS Careers Fair

The BEETS team will be holding a Careers Fair this Friday 25 August at Chipping Barnet Library from 2:00pm – 4:00pm, for secondary level students in Barnet who are wanting to find out more about the various different career options available to them, whether it be further study or an apprenticeship and/or traineeship.
