Pavement investment programme well underway

The work, which is part of a five-year programme between 2015 and 2020, will see almost £8million spent on pavements during this financial year. Barnet has one of the largest pavement networks in the capital, totalling more than 3.5million square metres. Since work began 88 pavements have been renewed. In a survey of residents in these streets, 91 per cent of people surveyed told the council that they agreed the work was an improvement.
Street cleansing to increase across Barnet

The council is investing £600,000 in new-generation equipment, including five large mechanical sweepers, to improve efficiency and maintain roads more vigorously all year round. The council has also obtained new street vacuums for the removal of smaller pieces of light litter. The investment is expected to save hundreds of thousands of pounds per year from the council’s budget.
A bumper summer of fun ahead

Getting underway this month, there is once again an extensive calendar of activities and courses on offer across the borough aimed at inspiring 8 to 19 year olds (up to 25 for people with learning difficulties and disabilities). Every year more than 2,000 young people take part in the council’s Youth Service Positive Activities Programme. This summer will see more than 50 exciting courses and activities available to young people who are living or being educated in the borough.
Barnet celebrates Apprenticeship Week

Barnet Council is joining apprentices and businesses across the borough by celebrating National Apprenticeship Week (NAW), from 14 to 18 March 2016. To mark the week, the council is pledging to make 15 apprenticeship opportunities available to local residents in the next year and is asking partners and local businesses to do the same.

Updated 13.00 Sunday 25 June Yesterday Barnet Homes conducted further inspections of the three tower blocks on Granville Road, accompanied by officers from London Fire Brigade. As a result of these inspections we can confirm that there are no additional fire safety concerns. Council agrees approach to tackling financial pressures

The recommendations put forward will help Barnet Council take a proactive approach to address an estimated budget gap of £62 million between now and 2024. Financial challenges continue to be faced by local authorities across the country. Barnet Council has a budget gap of £10million in 2018/19, whilst a budget gap of £42million has also been identified by the end of the 2021/2022 financial year. Current calculations estimate this could rise to £62million by March 2024.
Council proposes to build new leisure centre

Plans to replace Church Farm Leisure Centre with a new state-of-the-art sports facility at Victoria Recreation Ground are set to be discussed at Policy and Resources Committee (16 December 2015). The proposed new building will include a 25 metre six lane community swimming pool, a learner pool, a café, a fitness suite and flexible studio space.
Barnet residents recognised for making a difference

Held at Hendon Town Hall, on Tuesday 29 March, the special ceremony recognised the efforts of more than 50 people and groups who were nominated for their hard work and dedication to their community. The Worshipful the Mayor of Barnet, Councillor David Longstaff, presented each of the nominees with a certificate. Five of the nominees were judged to have made an outstanding contribution to life in the borough and were presented with a framed vellum in recognition of their achievements.
Illegal alcohol and tobacco worth thousands seized

The operation involving Barnet Council Trading Standards officers, HM Revenue and Customs officers, the police and detection dogs from Operation Wagtail, led to the seizure of thousands of pounds of tobacco and alcohol from the Deansbrook Supermarket in Deansbrook Road, Burnt Oak, and from H&S International Foods a few doors away. In total, officers from HMRC took away 14,000 cigarettes, around 12kgs of hand rolling tobacco, and more than 100 litres of wine and spirits found to have had no UK Duty paid on them.
