Barnet rogue landlords and letting agents fined £26,500 after rat and cockroach infestations
Last updated:
Barnet Council’s enforcement officers found that 80 Highfield Avenue, Golders Green, had not been registered as a House of Multiple Occupancy (HMO) – despite being home to nine people. They discovered a faulty fire alarm system, stairs and flooring that had been partially eaten by rats, and a severe cockroach infestation – all breaches of HMO management regulations.
In the initial reopening phase, gyms, studios and pools will reopen at Burnt Oak, Hendon, Copthall and New Barnet Leisure Centres, while facilities at Finchley Lido Leisure Centre will open at a later date. Following Covid Secure guidance, anyone wishing to use the facilities will need to pre-book a one hour time slot via the Better app or website.

Young people’s lives have been severely impacted this year with school closures and the cancellation of exams which is why we want to ensure they have the mental health support they need while deciding on next steps for the 2020/2021 academic year. We want young people to know that it’s normal to experience feelings of stress and/or anxiety, and that talking about your feelings can help – which can be much easier to do with someone anonymous.
Globally, the topic of racism came to the forefront of mainstream media as well as social and political conversations, following the death of George Floyd and the subsequent protests. We wanted to get youth perspectives on race relations in the UK and the tangible steps they believe would result in long-term change.
Schools and colleges have been asked to provide exam boards with two pieces of information for each subject: the grade they believe each pupil would have achieved if teaching had continued and the ranking order of students by performance at each grade. Due to the new marking process, these grades will not be used to obtain a school average or a Barnet average as in previous years. However, Barnet A-Level results have consistently been in the top five per cent nationally over the last few years.

While national league tables have been suspended this year, it is expected that Barnet students will again perform strongly in their GCSEs. Last year, students in the borough ranked second in the country for Progress 8 scores, which gauge the progress made by each student during their time at secondary school, out of 151 local authorities. At the same time, the average Attainment 8 score, which is a way of measuring pupils across eight qualifications including Maths and English, saw Barnet ranked second highest nationally.
