More than 80 Barnet schools have recently been awarded their TfL Travel for Life accreditation by Transport for London (TfL). TfL Travel for Life (formally STARS) is TfL's accreditation scheme for London schools and nurseries. TfL Travel for Life inspires young Londoners to travel to school sustainably, actively, responsibly, and safely by championing walking, scooting and cycling.

Barnet Council, in collaboration with the Metropolitan Police, is launching a groundbreaking partnership during Restorative Justice Week 2023 (19-25 November). This will promote restorative justice (RJ) initiatives within the borough, creating a platform for dialogue and healing among those impacted by crime.  The collaboration will provide a blueprint for improvements in RJ provision across the Met and Barnet.

Barnet council has launched a British Sign Language (BSL) video interpreting service, InterpretersLive!, that assists deaf and hard of hearing residents access its contact centres.

A landlord has been ordered to pay £24,000 in a fine and costs after Barnet Council inspectors found he had been housing five tenants in a dangerous property. They discovered issues including damaged doors and an insecure front door at the House of Multiple Occupancy (HMO). Officers reported an overbearing smell and a first-floor landing blocked by so many items that a tenant had to climb over them to enter and leave his room.

The London Borough of Barnet has put out the following statement following the death today, September 8 2022, of Her Majesty The Queen. The Worshipful Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Alison Moore, said: “It is with the deepest sadness that we learnt today of the death of Her Majesty The Queen. We share in the profound grief felt across the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and the entire world.

The Worshipful Mayor of Barnet, Cllr Alison Moore, today (11 September) proclaimed His Majesty The King in the borough of Barnet. The Proclamation took place at 2pm at Hendon Town Hall. The Mayor was joined by the Representative Deputy Lieutenant Martin Russell, Barnet Council Leader Cllr Barry Rawlings, councillors, past mayors, and the council’s leadership team. The ceremony was also attended by Barnet residents.

Council services on bank holiday Monday

Following the announcement of the bank holiday to fall on Monday 19 September, there will be a number of changes to council services including schools, libraries, bin collections and the council’s contact centre. Funerals will proceed as normal and death registrations can be facilitated via 020 8359 2000, between 9 – 11, if you require urgent same-day burial or cremation. For details, please see below:

A Service of Commemoration for Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was held this evening, Sunday 18 September, at St Mary’s Church in Hendon followed by a minute’s silence observed at Hendon Town Hall. The service was conducted by the Vicar of Hendon and Area Dean of Barnet Reverend Dr Julie Gittoes with the Worshipful Mayor of Barnet Cllr Alison Moore and Representative Deputy Lieutenant Mr Martin Russell also paying tribute.

Barnet Council has launched a consultation on the A1000 cycle lane which includes a series of workshops and focus groups involving local residents and businesses. In late 2020 as part of a Government and Transport for London (TfL) funded response to Covid-19 impacts on public transport, the council installed the cycle lane from just south of North Finchley Town Centre to the borough boundary with Haringey. 

Councillors are also encouraging motorists to other forms of sustainable transport for the day, while raising awareness of the various benefits that active travel, such as cycling and walking, have to climate change, health, the air we breathe and the local economy. Cllr Alan Schneiderman, Chair of the Environment and Climate Change committee, said: “We’ve declared a climate emergency in Barnet and have put sustainability at the heart of everything we do to ensure we become a net zero borough by 2042.
