Supporting green skills in Barnet

BarNET-Zero logo

Working together to become one of London’s most sustainable boroughs, join us on our journey.

We are working to create and support green jobs and skills. Forming part of our Climate Action Plan and our upcoming Economic Development framework.

Our commitment

We are helping residents to learn green skills, and supporting our businesses to become more sustainable, by:

  • gaining a better understanding of the Green Economy in Barnet
  • creating opportunities to make Barnet an attractive place for sustainable business and investment
  • providing opportunities for residents to train for green skilled jobs
  • supporting the growth and availability of green jobs across the borough
  • resourcing the council's own retrofitting programme, by boosting the capacity of local suppliers
  • supporting the sharing economy and sustainable business practices

Green skills initiatives

We are already supporting green skills and initiatives across the borough.

The recent launch of The Skills Centre in Edgware. Designed to build opportunities and transform lives. Giving residents skills in green construction and insulation

Barnet and Southgate College gained government funding to offer new facilities, including:

  • the development of new courses and qualifications
  • new approaches for collaborative teaching
  • digital and green skills training for staff.

The West London Green Skills Hub run workshop and events. Giving access to jobs and information.

Initiatives with Middlesex University, such as

  • submitting a proposal for a funded sustainability LGA Net Zero project
  • a wider programme of collaboration planned for later this year
  • a joint sustainability steering group.

As part of our housing retrofit programme we are including green skills training.

We are also working with partners to promote the construction sector to residents. This includes green skills. Our recent "Women into Construction" programme, gave 12 women work placements in construction.
