How we're making homes greener in Barnet

BarNET-Zero logo

Working together to become one of London’s most sustainable boroughs, join us on our journey.

Housing is the biggest source of carbon emissions in Barnet, whether from existing homes or new developments. That’s why we’re committed to making all homes in the borough more energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

Together with Barnet Homes, we’re improving council properties to reduce emissions and future proof them.

We’re also working with developers, partners, communities and residents to improve private housing.

Our vision for greener homes

In our Corporate Plan 2023-26 we’ve made it a priority to care for people, our places, and the planet.

Our vision is to become one of London's most sustainable boroughs, by being vocal climate leaders, taking action to protect our environment and ensuring our actions don't have a negative impact on future generations.

To support our ambition, our Housing Strategy makes it a priority for all homes meet high environmental and energy-efficient standards.

We’re also embedding sustainability into new housing developments across Barnet.

Improving energy efficiency in homes

As part of the Home Energy Conservation Act (HECA), we report the steps we are taking to improve energy efficiency to the Government.

How we're retrofitting council homes

We’re working with Barnet Homes to retrofit our Council Homes to make them more energy efficient.. We want to achieve an average Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) of level B by 2030 across all our housing stock.

Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund

Using a grant from the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund, we're improving the insulation and energy performance of council homes. This work is due to be completed by March 2025.

Our plans to make new developments more sustainable

Our new draft Local Plan, will guide future developments across Barnet.

We're planning for up to 45,000 new homes to be built across the borough by 2036. We’re committed to making sure these homes are designed for a changing climate, with energy efficiency at the heart of their construction.

We are working with partners to deliver a newly developed net zero town at Brent Cross Town by 2030, setting a new standard for sustainable living.
