BarNET ZERO challenge

Join us on our journey to become one of London’s most sustainable boroughs.

About the challenge

The climate crisis affects everyone, and it will take all of us working together to find solutions.

That’s why, in November 2023, we teamed up with Middlesex University, Hammersons, Microsoft and NatWest Bank, to launch the BarNET ZERO Challenge.

A competition to encourage individuals and communities in Barnet to come forward with fresh, innovative ideas to deliver the recommendations from our Citizen’s Assembly. The Challenge was looking for ideas that can help reduce carbon emissions and move us closer to our net zero goals, across the 5 areas identified in our Citizen’s Assembly:

  1. Waste and Sustainable consumption
  2. Learning, communication and partnerships
  3. Nature and Biodiversity
  4. Travel
  5. Housing, buildings and renewable energy

 The winner

There were over 100 submissions from residents, and community groups from across Barnet.

Following workshops these were further developed into 22 workable solutions

Judges decided on the top 3 ideas:

  • Fiona Quinton - GRUBS – Green Roofs Upon Bus Shelters
  • Anna Tobin - Eco Mobility
  • Karem Salas - Eco Learn and Play

The public were then asked to vote for the winner at Brent Cross Shopping Centre.

We're pleased to announce the winner was Fiona Quinton and we are working with her now to develop the GRUBS idea.

The BarNET ZERO Challenge is an ongoing effort, and every idea brings us closer to a greener, more sustainable Barnet. Join us, and together we can create a more sustainable future for our borough.
