Working with schools and young people

BarNet Zero Logo

Join us on our journey to become one of London’s most sustainable boroughs.

Our ambition is to become a net zero carbon borough by 2042, and we’re acting now to make this target a reality. By working in partnership with schools and young people across the borough, we're shaping a sustainable future for generations to come.

From teaching about climate change to creating healthier environments, we’re taking steps to ensure that our borough is future-ready for everyone.

Sustainable Schools Working Group

We have launched a Sustainable Schools Working Group to help guide our efforts in supporting schools to become more sustainable. We’re focussing on two key areas:

1. Buildings and travel

Including:

  • signposting school to where funding may be available to retrofit school buildings
  • creating a safer environment for pupils to get to school through the introduction of the school streets scheme

2. Curriculum development and activities relating to pupils and families

Supporting schools to build a framework of suggestions and learning resources, such as a Climate Charter.

Initiatives running in partnership with local schools

School Superzones

We’re working to make the places where children and young people live, learn and play, safer and healthier by working with local communities and schools to introduce School Superzones

The Greater London Assembly (GLA) have provided funding of £60k for two schools this year in Barnet.

Cycle confident training for children

We are working with Cycle Confident to deliver Bikeability courses to primary school pupils across Barnet.

These courses encourage walking, scooting and cycling to school -helping young people to travel to school in a sustainable, active and responsible way.

Citizen’s Assembly Recommendation

Following on from our Citizen’s Assembly recommendation to "Educate Children and Young people around Climate Change and Sustainability through Curriculum" we are:

  • working to improve our engagement with schools across Barnet, by working together in finding solutions to the barriers schools face in becoming more sustainable across their schools and wider curriculum

  • working on developing a Barnet School Charter and School Strategy which we will launch in January 2025; Developed with UCL’s Climate Action Unit and schools across Barnet.
