Promoting your activity
All consultation and engagement activities need to be published on Engage Barnet, the council’s online engagement hub, contact the Consultation and Engagement team for more information.
Depending on your community participation activity and who you want to involve, you'll usually need to promote it. The better you promote it, the more likely you're to involve the stakeholders. If you have are running a consultation it is particularly important that you publicise it widely. Barnet Council always publishes a full list of its open consultations in the weekly Barnet First email newsletter.
The council’s Communications Team can advise on other ways you can promote your activity externally. Some options, such as outdoor advertising, have a cost so make sure to budget budget for promotion if this is important to your project.
Think about who needs to know about your project and what channels you’ll need to use to reach them. As well as Barnet First you could also use:
- Together monthly email bulletin: This monthly roundup of community-focused news and updates reaches about 2000 local organisations.
- Ward councillors and other local influencers: Trusted local figures who are well-connected in a community are valuable for getting your messages out through word of mouth.
- Pop-ups and street canvassing: Getting out and about in the community is a good way to reach people and get their involvement. Always remember to carry your work ID and let the council’s Community Safety team know you are doing this.
- Schools: Looking to engage parents? Contact Barnet Education and Learning Service (BELS) to ask about reaching them through communications to schools.
