Boosting connectivity with 4G and 5G
We're committed to ensuring Barnet has reliable mobile connectivity for residents and businesses across the borough. That's why we're working proactively with mobile operators to improve 4G and facilitate the rollout of 5G technology.
Our approach
- We're partnering with the West London Alliance (WLA) to develop a framework that encourages telecom companies to invest in our digital infrastructure
- we're carrying out comprehensive mobile signal surveys using our fleet of bin lorries to understand the state of the borough and inform our work with operators
- we're actively seeking and coordinating investment to expand 4G coverage and accelerate the deployment of 5G across the borough
- we're working closely with mobile operators to identify and address coverage gaps, ensuring everyone can benefit from a strong signal.
By enabling investment in 4G and 5G, we're laying the foundation for a more connected future. This will not only improve our residents' digital experience but also support businesses, drive innovation, and boost our local economy.
5G safety information
Barnet council must follow central government rules for mobile communications, including 5G. These rules, part of the Communications act, allow telecom operators to install their equipment on public assets like council buildings and street assets.
Key responsibilities
- Barnet council can't refuse telecom equipment installations if operators follow the law. Blocking them could lead to legal action
- telecom operators are required to work within the code of practice for wireless network development in England
- all equipment must meet safety standards set by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP).
- telecom operators must submit planning applications for new equipment like masts or poles, including a statement that equipment meets safety standards set by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP).
- residents can view comments/objections can be reviewed transparently on our planning portal (using the advanced search function select advanced tab, using the search terms 'mast', 'pole', 'antenna' in the description keyword box).
