Benefits of the Gigabit Broadband Programme
If you live in a council owned property in Barnet, you can benefit from affordable and reliable gigabit speed broadband through the Gigabit Broadband Programme.
We’re working with network operators to bring high-speed, affordable internet to everyone in the borough. As the landlord for nearly 14,000 properties, we want to ensure that all our tenants and leaseholders can access the best possible and most affordable broadband connections, and ideally be able to choose from several service options.
By making it easier for operators to install gigabit broadband, we’re securing faster rollout, better service options, and improved network reliability for homes and businesses across Barnet.
What you get
At a time where we rely on the internet more than ever, these new connections will provide faster and more reliable fibre broadband, along with the most affordable packages available.
With gigabit speeds, residents can enjoy seamless online experiences without worrying about slow speeds or interruptions - whether it’s for video calls, day to day business, or accessing educational services.
Who will benefit
Council housing tenants and leaseholders will gain access to the gigabit speed broadband as part of this programme.
All Barnet residents will benefit from the nationwide rollout of gigabit-speed fibre broadband, expected by 2025. If enough residents show interest, it could encourage competition among providers, speeding up investment and bringing faster internet to more streets and neighbourhoods across the borough.
Local businesses will be able to improve their online services and grow their e-commerce opportunities.
The installation of gigabit broadband for our tenants and leaseholders began in Grahame Park Colindale, on 8 February 2021 and is scheduled to finish by the end of 2025.
As more network operators join the programme and the rollout timetable for Community Fibre is confirmed, we will update residents on when their area will be included.
What to expect
If you are one of our tenants or leaseholders, you will be contacted in advance by the service operator. They will send you a letter with details about the upcoming installation works.
All approved operators will provide clear information for residents before installation works start on their estate or along their street. Individual households are given notice by:
- letters
- flyers
- postcards
After the installation
After the network has been installed, you will be contacted by the provider with information about how to subscribe and enable the service in your home.
Affordable options are available, including advice from our BOOST team to help you choose the best deal and improve your digital skills.
