John Anthony will become the new statutory Director of Children’s Services at Barnet Council when he takes up the post in July.

He is currently the Operational Director for Children and Families at the London Borough of Redbridge, where he leads family help and social care services and manages a budget of £45m. Prior to this role, he spent seven years as Head of Service for Children and Families at Redbridge.

With Diplomas in Law and Legal Practice, and a Diploma in Social Work, John held senior roles in the youth justice system, working at Redbridge, Lambeth Council, and as the Head of Region for London’s Youth Justice Board.

John Anthony said:

“After many years working with such excellent colleagues at Redbridge, I’m very excited for a new chapter and to get started at Barnet.

“While I think most are aware of the challenges facing councils across London, I know I am leaving one very strong team in a good place and moving to another with an excellent record in Children and Families services.

“I look forward to meeting all of my colleagues and to get working to deliver the best services possible for Barnet’s children and families.”

Barnet Council Chief Executive, Cath Shaw, said:

“John was an outstanding candidate in a strong field. He has an excellent track record and we feel lucky to have him join Barnet.

“He will be working with an exceptional team of individuals who have, over recent years, brought Barnet’s Ofsted rating up to ‘good with outstanding features’.

“I’m confident with John on board the team will continue to deliver for Barnet’s children and families, and I look forward to working with him.”
