As part of a London-wide initiative funded by the Home Office to tackle knife crime, Barnet Council is introducing a permanent knife surrender bin and a one-day mobile bin in the borough.

These bins provide a safe and anonymous way for individuals to dispose of knives and other bladed weapons, ahead of new legislation banning ninja swords under Ronan’s Law, which comes into effect on 1 August 2025.

Bin location:

  • Static Bin: Bunns Lane, NW7 2DQ – (permanent, with three-year funding) next to the mini roundabout where Grahame Park Way meets Bunns Lane.

There will also be a mobile bin at Woodhouse Road, N12 9EY – 7 July 2025, 3:00–6:00 PM, exact location to be confirmed.

The council is launching a borough-wide communications campaign to raise further awareness. The success of the knife surrender bin at Mary Immaculate & St Gregory the Great (Union Street, Barnet) provides a strong case for further expansion.

That bin has been in place for over two years and has seen over 600 weapons surrendered last year, including knives and other dangerous items, without any reported safety incidents. This demonstrates both the community’s willingness to engage and the effectiveness of the initiative in reducing the availability of weapons.

Guidance for safe disposal will be issued as part of the communications campaign. These bins are often used not only by individuals but also by parents, carers, and family members seeking to safely dispose of weapons on behalf of others.

Barnet’s Cabinet Member and Chair of the Safer Communities Partnership Board, Cllr Sara Conway, said:

“Barnet is one of London’s safest boroughs, but we continue to support the introduction of additional measures to make our borough even safer and protect our communities.

“By providing these knife surrender bins, we are taking a proactive step towards removing knives from our streets and urge everyone to spread the word about this initiative and encourage the safe disposal of weapons.”
