The Worshipful the Mayor of the London Borough of Barnet, Cllr Danny Rich, has commemorated the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day) by paying tribute to those who served and made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of peace and freedom.

“Today marks the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day), a momentous occasion that brought the Second World War to its final close in 1945. On this day, we honour the courage and sacrifice of all those who served in the Far East — the men and women who endured extraordinary hardship in the pursuit of peace.

“As we reflect on this historic milestone, we remember not only the veterans who fought bravely, but also the families who waited anxiously at home and the many who never saw their loved ones return. Their stories are etched into our national memory and deserve our deepest respect and gratitude.

“Here in our wonderfully diverse borough, we are proud to be home to communities whose histories and heritages are deeply connected to the global events of the Second World War. Many families have personal links to those who served across the Commonwealth and beyond, and their contributions form an essential part of our shared story.

“As we commemorate VJ 80, I encourage residents of all backgrounds to remember, to listen, to learn, and to honour the legacy of those who gave so much. Let us use this anniversary not only to reflect on the past, but to reaffirm our commitment to peace, unity, and mutual respect.”

Tonight (Friday 15 August), Hendon Town Hall will be lit up white to commemorate VJ Day.
