Black History Month began with a celebratory event at the Visitor Pavilion in Brent Cross Town on Tuesday evening
Barnet is celebrating Black History Month this October, with a vibrant month-long celebration of events, around this year’s theme of ‘Reclaiming Narratives’.
Events include memoir readings about the migrant experience, Windrush film screenings, a history of the steelpan instrument, RAF Museum’s history of black pilots, and an appearance by Levi Roots. Cllr Anne Clarke, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure, Arts & Sports, said: “We were thrilled to raise the flag for Black History at the start of the month to celebrate Barnet’s rich cultural heritage and diversity. We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone at our celebratory events, which include a whole host of events that everyone can enjoy.”
This year’s Black History Month theme represents a significant shift towards recognising and correcting the narratives of Black history and culture.
To support local community groups to host their own events, Barnet Council has provided grants. Many of these events will highlight stories, allegories and histories, that underscore the authority’s commitment to correcting historical inaccuracies to showcase untold success stories and the full complexity of Black heritage.
