Barnet Council is introducing new measures to reduce the risk of flooding in Barnet.

The launch of the Sustainable Drainage Strategy is part of the council’s long-term vision to install Sustainable Drainage systems (SuDS) throughout the borough. It also sets out a long-term programme for delivery of SuDS on Barnet’s network of roads and pavements. These locations can be seen on Barnet Highway SuDS opportunity map.

The strategy is a key part of Barnet’s ambition to become one of London’s most sustainable boroughs. A Barnet Council spokesperson said:

“By implementing SuDS and investing in climate-resilient infrastructure, Barnet is taking important steps to protect homes, green public spaces, and build a future-ready borough. This strategy is another step forward as we work towards the council’s goal of becoming a Net Zero borough by 2042.”

SuDS aim to manage surface water at the nearest point of its source and are a natural alternative to traditional drainage networks like pipes and sewers.

They encourage urban greening and the utilisation of more permeable surfaces to:

  • Reduce the risk of surface water flooding
  • Reduce pollution from urban runoff
  • Deliver wider benefits such as enhancing biodiversity, improving aesthetics, and creating recreational space.

The strategy also encourages building developers to include sustainable flood defence practices in their design plans, such as installing rainwater harvesting and water butts. Natural methods such as planting trees and shrubs to absorb excess rainwater can also prevent the flooding of streets and houses in urban areas.

The strategy states that developers should consider implementing SuDs in all developments – no matter how large or small. It also provides technical guidance to developers for when they are designing SuDs, and outlines what requirements need to be met by them at the different stages of the planning application.

In 2024, the council completed its first SuDS scheme in Barnet with the £1.3m Halliwck Recreational ground scheme opened by the Worshipful the Mayor of Barnet, Cllr Tony Vourou. Further schemes currently in progress include:
