Barnet Council launched London’s first 3x3 basketball court yesterday, Sunday 8 June, with an event at Barnet Playing Fields, Underhill.

The court’s major upgrade was created in collaboration with the UK’s leading 3x3 basketball organisation, RISE 3x3, with new artwork designed by North London artist Darren John and his team at Absolutely Studio.

The event was attended by people of all ages from across the city who came to play in the first completely free, open to the public, 3x3 court in London.

The day also included the opportunity to shoot some hoops and learn more about the Olympic sport with an exhibition match and technical skill sessions from freestylers.

Cllr Anne Clarke, Barnet Council Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure, Arts & Sports, said:

“In Barnet we’ve got a great tradition of sport from our Olympic athletes brought up in the borough to the numerous sports teams and clubs.

“We know how valuable it is to give people access to sport for their health and wellbeing, as well as the opportunity to be part of a community and build confidence.

“So, I am hugely proud that Barnet is home to London’s first 3x3 court, and I hope we can see this exciting new Olympic sport grow across Barnet and the country.”

3x3 basketball is a variation of basketball played three-a-side, with one backboard and in a half-court but with specific lines and measurements compared to a normal half-court.

A game that has been played on full courts for decades, it began to take shape as its own sport from the early 2000s and has been an Olympic sport since 2020 and a Commonwealth Games sport since 2022, where England's Men's team won a gold medal, and Women’s won silver.

Martin Dyan, RISE 3x3 CEO said:

"As a born and bred Londoner from North London, I am so happy that we are launching London's first 3x3 court right here in Barnet.

“3x3 basketball is growing massively across the UK. It's a fun, fast and accessible sport for all ages.

“We've really enjoyed working with the council on this special project and can't wait to see the players from the community and all-around London playing some 3x3 here!"

Darren John, Director and Lead Artist at Absolutely Studio said:

"My abstract approach to this artwork transforms the court by mirroring the fluid movements of 3x3 basketball, creating a vibrant and engaging space that will bring so much positivity and joy to the community.

“Making art and public spaces accessible is vital for enriching lives and we love contributing to projects like this."
