Works are due to begin in early autumn, to improve West Hendon Playing Fields, including new sports and community facilities.

The first phase of the investment by Barnet Council is set to significantly enhance and improve the park’s accessibility, safety, and usability for residents of all ages.

Phase one of the £3.65 million investment will include:

  • Refurbishment of tennis courts
  • A new children’s playground
  • Pathway upgrades and sustainable drainage

The new playground and upgraded paths will create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for families, while the sustainable drainage measures will help future-proof the space against climate-related impacts.

Cllr Alan Schneiderman, Barnet Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, said: “West Hendon Playing Fields is a beautiful and vast green space, and we want to make the most of it.

“We’re a council that is committed to caring for people, our places, and the planet, and investing in our parks and green spaces here in Barnet is one of our top priorities. Our new-look park will be a great place to visit for people of all ages, as well as helping wildlife benefit from better biodiversity. We look forward to seeing the completed project”.

The proposed improvements align with community engagement feedback and prioritises items raised by residents such as improved access, play areas, walking routes, sports provision and biodiversity enhancements.

This is the latest significant investment in our parks and open spaces.

Last month London’s first 3x3 basketball court opened at Barnet Playing Fields, Underhill, and in February 2024, the council opened The Fair Play playground at Victoria Recreation Ground in East Barnet, an inclusive and accessible playground to cater to the needs of disabled children - the first of its kind in the UK.
