Barnet Construction Supply Chain Support Programme Meet the Buyer event
Barnet Council has extended the Barnet Construction Supply Chain Support Programme for another year, funded through the Government's UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
Since its launch in 2022, the programme has helped retain nearly £10m in the local economy by supporting Barnet-based businesses to win work from developers operating in the borough, as well as from the council and Barnet Homes.
The programme has mapped the local construction sector and built a vibrant network of over 120 local businesses across more than 40 distinct trades. Through events like Meet the Buyer, industry workshops covering topics like recruitment and retrofit, networking sessions, and one-to-one mentoring, it has boosted the capacity for these businesses to bid for larger construction and building contracts. It has also helped developers and main contractors working in Barnet to connect with and build trust in some of the many experienced and skilled local companies based in the borough.
The extended programme will focus on expanding business opportunities and helping SMEs adapt to the new Procurement Act 2023. This is part of the council’s wider efforts to drive inclusive economic growth that benefits everyone living, working and studying in Barnet.
Cllr Ernest Ambe, Barnet’s Small Business Champion, said: “The Barnet Construction Supply Chain Programme is a strong example of how collaboration between the council, local businesses, and developers can generate meaningful economic opportunities—helping to ensure that investment is retained and reinvested within our local community.”
To date, the project has supported 120 SMEs and helped them win 37 contracts worth nearly £10m. Harvey Walton, Director of Landmark, said: “As a Barnet-based business, we would fully encourage other SMEs to sign up to the Barnet Construction Supply Chain Project – it’s a win-win situation where developers can source products and services from local companies, and local companies can grow their businesses and expand their customer base. The team have been brilliant at living up to their slogan ‘helping local companies win more work’ and we are now in touch with potential clients on large scale projects which we wouldn’t have been if it wasn’t for the proactive help of MTW Consultants and the Economy and Skills Team at Barnet Council.”
