Barnet Council has launched its Step In campaign to encourage residents, especially men, to take part in free, half-hour online bystander training sessions delivered by the Suzy Lamplugh Trust. The training offers practical tips on how to safely intervene when witnessing harassment and help make public spaces safer for women and girls.

Nationally, 80% of women have said they’ve been harassed in public, and in a recent survey 65% of women in Barnet said they had experienced harassment from men. The campaign highlights simple actions anyone can take to challenge abuse and support safer communities.

Residents, people who work in Barnet, and local businesses, can get involved is by signing up to the Barnet Charter, and booking one of the council’s online sessions:

  • Monday 29 September, 6–6.30pm
  • Thursday 9 October, 12.30–1pm
  • Wednesday 22 October, 6–6.30pm
  • Tuesday 4 November, 12.30–1pm
  • Tuesday 25 November, 12.30–1pm.

Cllr Sara Conway, Chair of Barnet’s Safer Communities Partnership Board, said: “We all have a role to play in stopping violence against women and girls. These short sessions offer practical advice on how to intervene safely and effectively. I encourage everyone, men and women, to take part.

“This is part of our wider work to make Barnet safer, including targeted interventions, evidence-led patrols, pop-up hubs and an upgraded CCTV network. I’m grateful to the Suzy Lamplugh Trust and our CCTV partners DSSL for supporting this campaign.”
