Barnet Council names new Chief Executive

Interim Chief Executive Cath Shaw is to become Barnet Council’s permanent new Chief Executive, subject to ratification by Council on 4 March. Cath’s appointment as Chief Executive was recommended by the cross-party Employment Sub-Committee (26 February) and followed an extensive recruitment process. She is the first woman to have held the post in the council’s 60-year history.
The council's Emergency On-Call Response Team has been managing a major fire incident throughout the night, affecting properties at 418-430 Watford Way. Consequently, the A1 Watford Way (Barnet By-Pass) was closed in both directions due to fire service activities from Fiveways Corner to A5100 The Broadway (Mill Hill Circus). The roads have now been reopened.

Council sets budget and new Council Tax rate

Barnet Council’s proposed budget for the financial year 2025-26 was approved last night (4 March) at a meeting of Full Council. The council is legally required to set a balanced budget, and this year’s budget includes a general Council Tax increase of 2.98% plus an Adult Social Care precept increase of 2%. Barnet continues to maintain a Council Tax lower than any neighbouring boroughs.
Barnet Council has adopted its new Local Plan at a Full Council meeting this week (4 March), marking a significant milestone in the Borough's development strategy. The comprehensive Local Plan will guide growth and development across Barnet up to 2036, replacing the previous Local Plan from 2012.

The result of yesterday’s by-election in the Finchley Church End ward was declared last night (Thursday 6 March) at Barnet Council Headquarters, in Colindale. The seat was won by Josh Mastin-Lee, Conservative Party Candidate.
Barnet Council celebrates inspirational women and girls with awards ceremony ahead of International Women’s Day

Eleven of Barnet’s most inspiring women and girls have been recognised in a council-backed awards programme at Hendon Town Hall, Thursday, 6 March 2025. For the second year running the awards were given out for outstanding contributions and accomplishments in the fields of business, sport, environment, and community and culture.
Barnet Council’s Damage to Highways scheme has saved the council over £1million since its launch in 2020, allowing the council to recoup the cost of repairing damage to pavements caused by building works. Originally launched as a pilot scheme in four wards back in September 2020, the Damage to Highways scheme was expanded to cover the entire borough in July 2023.
Barnet Council’s Cabinet approved plans (3 March) to introduce a food waste collection service to all households across the borough by the end of March 2026. The service is already being offered to schools and businesses in Barnet.
