Barnet Council hosted its annual Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration service at Middlesex University yesterday (Sunday 28 January), bringing together the borough’s multifaith community to remember all victims of genocide.

Last night (Tuesday, 23 January), we celebrated a brilliant new addition to Brent Cross Town ‘The 108’ – the first indoor baseball and softball centre in Europe.

The launch event was full of excitement, with people eager to try out the sport and watch professional players on the field including the GB National Youth baseball team and guests also got a taste of the new American-style BBQ and sports bar.

The Minister for Loneliness, Stuart Andrew, visited Barnet's Care Leavers Hub on Thursday, 18 January, to gain insight into the pivotal role the hub plays in supporting care leavers to build and maintain social connections.

Barnet’s Cabinet Members voted last night (Tuesday 16 January) to approve a new sustainable drainage and flood defence strategy aimed at reducing future flood risks in the borough.

The strategy encourages building developers to include sustainable flood defence practices in their design plans, such as installing rainwater harvesting and water butts. Natural methods such as planting trees and shrubs to absorb excess rainwater can also prevent the flooding of streets and houses in urban areas.

Barnet Council will be marking Holocaust Memorial Day on Sunday 28 January with a service at Middlesex University. The annual multi-faith community event will be held at Rickett Quadrangle in the Burroughs, Hendon at 2pm and all are invited to attend.

The theme chosen by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust for 2024 is ‘Fragility of Freedom’.

Barnet will compete against London’s other boroughs for the ‘best float’ competition during the London New Year’s Day Parade (LNYDP) – and you are invited to watch!

The theme of this new year’s extravaganza is to showcase London’s boroughs to a global audience with an iconic theme past, present or in the future. The theme of Barnet’s float will be BarNET ZERO, reflecting Barnet’s ambition to become net zero as a council by 2030 and as a borough by 2042.

Cllr Dan Thomas, Leader of the Barnet Conservative Group, has led tributes to the former Leader of the Council and Mayor of Barnet, Brian Salinger, who passed away yesterday (21 December). 

Brian Salinger was first elected a Conservative councillor in 1986, representing Friern Barnet Ward and, after boundary changes, Oakleigh Ward. He retired at the end of his mayoral year 2017-2018 as the 53rd Mayor of Barnet.
