Every year, it’s estimated that across the UK, more than £20billion of benefits that people are eligible for are not being claimed – and that’s what Barnet’s innovative and award-winning Financial Calculator is seeking to change for people struggling with the cost of living crisis in the borough.
Gas supply outage affecting homes in N10

Over 3,000 homes in the N10 postcode area are without gas following water from a burst main entering the gas supply network on Sunday (12 January). The postcode straddles the Barnet and Haringey border but most of the affected properties are within the borough of Barnet. Cadent, the gas supplier, has warned it will take at least a week for gas to be restored.
Barnet Council held its annual Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) commemoration yesterday (Sunday 26 January) with a service at Middlesex University, bringing together the borough’s multifaith community to remember the Jewish victims of the Holocaust and genocides throughout the world.
Following the passing of former Mayor of Barnet and Councillor for 35 years, Eva Greenspan, a by-election will be held for one councillor in the Finchley Church End ward on Thursday 6 March 2025. Polling stations in Finchley Church End will be open from 7am - 10pm.
We are currently experiencing problems with the streetlights in various locations across the borough. It is affecting specific areas but there are also some individual streetlights that are not operating as they should. Council officers have identified a variety of issues from lights not working at night, switching on later than they should and being on in the day, and 24/7.

By-Election result – Burnt Oak ward

The result of yesterday’s by-election in the Burnt Oak ward has been declared at Barnet Council Headquarters, in Colindale. The seat was won by Labour Party candidate, Charlotte Elizabeth Daus. This means the political composition of the Council is now 40 Labour, 19 Conservative and 3 members who are not part of a council political group (and one vacancy in Finchley Church End Ward). The turnout for this by-election was 17.3 per cent.
A landlord has been ordered to pay £37,000 in fines and costs after Barnet Council inspectors found 18 tenants including children and infants, sharing a house in Edgware. The home, in Fairmead Crescent, Edgware, originally built as a three-bedroom linked terraced house had been converted into eight bedsits and was being operated without a licence.
Barnet Council receives £56m of government support but Leader warns of ‘tough decisions’

Barnet Council is to receive £55.7m in government support as part of its financial plans to close the council’s budget gap for the next year. The Leader of the Council, Cllr Barry Rawlings, received notice on Thursday afternoon (20 February) of the decision by the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government that the council’s application for ‘exceptional financial support’ was granted.
