Council byelaws

Last updated:

The London Borough of Barnet, like other councils, has wide powers to make byelaws in relation to a range of areas under its control. Generally, byelaws seek to  uphold good order, government and public health. Byelaws created by the council must be sealed and then confirmed by a higher power as valid before they are enforceable. After this, byelaws are given the weight of law and are generally enforceable by the council. Persons who contravene an enforceable byelaw may be subject to a penalty or a fine.

My Say Matters strategy

Last updated:

Children and young people helped us develop the My Say Matters strategy. Many of them have told us that they know they have a right to be heard and they have lots to say. Children and young people in the borough told us that equality, diversity and inclusion need to be at the heart of My Say Matters. This means everyone will be supported to share their voice and express themselves fully. Especially those from racially diverse, migrant and LGBT+ communities, disabled children and other marginalised groups.

New Barnet

Last updated:

Before the railway line was built there was no New Barnet. In order to build the railway the Great Northern Company had to buy land from different farms and estates. The owner of one of these estates through which the line had to pass, known as Lyonsdown, forced the railway company to purchase the whole of the estate rather than just the fields which were needed. The railway company sold the rest of the Lyonsdown estate to The British Land Company in 1850.
